Get prepped for Sun Awareness Week
With the aim of promoting safety in the sun, we’re busting sun care myths to keep you safe from the dangers that come with too much sun exposure.
1) YOU HAVE TO GO RED BEFORE YOU GO BROWN • NO, TRAUMA TANS DO NOT LAST.
This is one of the biggest myths in sun protection, and it contributes to long-term skin damage. The fact is that as soon as the skin reddens, it’s shouting for help! Known as “trauma tanning”, this is the result of poor protection. Instead of a deep golden tan, the skin burns and sheds, leaving the skin tanless in days. By selecting an SPF right for YOUR skin and introducing your skin to the sun slowly, you can achieve a long-lasting tan.
Luckily, Ultrasun’s tan activating ingredients are paired with a high level UVA and UVB filter in a broad spectrum solution. With the hope of encouraging less exposure, which will mean less skin and cellular damage and sun reactions. Ultrasun’s Tan Activator Face and Tan Activator Body (SPF 30) contain the revolutionary complex BronzylTM, a natural tan enhancer which has been shown to accelerate the tanning process by over 40% in ten days.
2) JUST SLAP IT ON • NO, HOW YOU APPLY SUN CREAM MATTERS TOO.
A survey by the British Association of Dermatologists in 2016 identified that 8 out of 10 people are failing to adequately apply sunscreen. Although it’s a gasp-worthy statistic, the positive side is that it’s easily rectified!
Here’s our guide to getting it right:
- Apply Ultrasun first thing, before getting dressed – totally naked is best!
- Always apply indoors out of direct sunlight.
- Don’t be stingy – apply plenty!
- Wait at least 15 minutes before you go outside.
3) ALL BODY PARTS ARE CREATED EQUALLY “SUN STRONG” • NO, SOME BODY PARTS ARE MORE VULNERABLE THAN OTHERS.
The most common site for men to develop a malignant melanoma is on the chest or back. For women it’s more likely on the legs. Lips are often forgotten and with no natural shade like the lower lip, the upper lip area in particular shows ageing. Help prevent damage (UVA & UVB) with the Ultrasun Lip Protection (SPF30). This high quality lip protector is enriched with blackcurrant seed oil to moisturise and even keeps your lippy in place.
4) PIGMENTATION IS A SKINCARE ISSUE • NO, IT’S A UV CONSEQUENCE.
After wrinkles, pigmentation is usually the next skin worry. Brown patches of pigmentation appear on both the hands and face and even the décolletage area. These are caused specifically by UVA rays which penetrate deep into your skin. Ultrasun have developed an all NEW Anti-Pigmentation Tinted Face (SPF 50+ in honey colour) so those sun spots a thing of the past! It’s the skincare ‘silver bullet’ that delivers targeted skincare. As well as very high UV protection, there’s an added subtle tint for both a highly effective, low maintenance routine. Before you know it the signs of sun damaged skin are reversed and better yet you’re still protected against future skin ageing.
5) SHADE IS SAFE • NO, IT ISN’T THAT SIMPLE.
Shade given by trees and parasols only gives protection from around 70% of UV rays. You may think you’ve got it made in the shade, but you can still be hit by harmful UV rays that bounce off the sand, pavement, pool or ocean. They can even bounce off grass! Remember to take breaks from the sun indoors – Netflix and chill, anyone?
